How to Get Clay in Deep Dish Dungeon

Find the Pickaxe first, then revisit blocked passages to break yellow Goo Piles.

1. Get the tool you need

  1. Reach the prison with a Small Key and the Prison Key.
  2. Near your prison entry stairs, take the adjacent staircase down another level.
  3. Go through the lower door and collect the Pickaxe. Watch for skeleton archers.
  4. Equip the Pickaxe before heading back to the yellow piles.

See the Pickaxe location guide for the entire route from the main hall.

2. Identify and break a Goo Pile

  1. Start with the yellow mound you can see in a blocked prison passage, or return to the sewers.
  2. Point at the Goo Pile itself. It looks like yellow goo or a bright mound, not an ordinary rock pile.
  3. Hit it with the Pickaxe until it breaks.
  4. Pick up the Clay and anything else that drops.
  5. Continue along other blocked passages and repeat. Do not rely on every pile providing the same amount of Clay.

3. Spend Clay on the right station

Craftable itemIngredientsUse
Oven5 Clay + 1 GrateBake recipes that use the Oven
Smelter5 Clay + 5 Scrap MetalCamp metal-processing station
Water Pot4 Clay + 1 Iron RodWater storage/handling at camp

To build one, return to hand Crafting, select the station and confirm you have the other ingredient as well as the Clay.

4. Don't confuse the two smelters

  1. For early keys, use the large Big Smelter already built beneath the main hall; it needs molds, Coal and Scrap Metal.
  2. For a craftable camp Smelter, collect 5 Clay and 5 Scrap Metal and make it from the Crafting menu.
  3. If you are stuck trying to enter the prison, stop farming Clay for a new Smelter. You can already cast the required keys at the dungeon's machine.

Wrong tool? The Hammer breaks rusty bars; the Pickaxe breaks yellow Goo Piles. A locked door still needs its key.
